Private Evaluation versus School Evaluation

A private evaluation differs from a school evaluation in several ways. Private evaluations are typically more comprehensive, addressing a wider range of areas, including emotional and behavioral challenges that school evaluations might overlook. Schools often require evidence of an academic need, such as a student being significantly behind their peers, before they will conduct an evaluation, which can delay support. Additionally, school evaluations may focus on concerns raised by the institution rather than those expressed by the family. Parents should clarify the specific focus of any school evaluation to understand what will and will not be included.

Choosing a private evaluation can offer families more privacy and control over the process. Parents may decide to withhold  private evaluation results from the school. Private evaluations are particularly beneficial when a child does not meet the school’s criteria for testing, yet parents still have concerns. While school evaluations are free and accessible to all children, including those in private or homeschooling settings, private evaluations offer a more tailored and comprehensive approach.
